Portable Oxygen Concentrators & International Travel

Planning a trip abroad while on oxygen therapy can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. At Liberty Medical, we provide FAA-approved portable oxygen concentrator rentals designed to make international travel safe, simple, and stress-free.

Physician Approval & Documentation

A prescription is required for portable oxygen concentrator use. Some airlines also require a physician's statement, which must be signed and carried with you on board.

Please call your airline ahead of time to inform them you will be flying with an oxygen concentrator if you plan to use it during the flight.

Before booking your trip, make sure you know your in-flight oxygen needs so you can select the right equipment and confirm adequate battery time.

Every airline has its own procedures—some may require forms to be faxed for approval. Liberty Medical helps streamline this process by assisting with airline paperwork as part of our rental concierge service.

International Airlines & Oxygen Policies

Policies for oxygen vary widely among international airlines. Some carriers still provide therapeutic oxygen on board, while others only allow FAA-approved POCs.

Costs may also vary—certain airlines provide oxygen at no charge, while others bill passengers for the service.

Liberty Medical does not ship equipment outside of the United States. For one-way rentals from the U.S. to an international destination, a family member or companion must return the unit on the flight back, as we cannot accept returns shipped from outside the country.

For travelers needing one-way international solutions, we also offer special purchase options.

Before booking, it's important to research your airline's specific oxygen policy. Liberty Medical can help you review your options so you're prepared before departure.

Airline Battery Requirements

All airlines flying in and out of the U.S. must allow FAA-approved portable oxygen concentrators. However, each airline sets its own rules about batteries.

Most follow the 150% rule, which means you'll need 1.5 times your flight time in battery life.

Example: On a 5-hour flight, you'll need at least 7.5 hours of battery power.

Because long-haul flights can exceed 24 hours, planning your battery needs in advance is essential.

International Flight Battery Requirements

When flying internationally, extended or double batteries are not permitted for portable oxygen concentrators, as they typically exceed the airline's watt-hour (Wh) limits.

You may only travel with standard/single batteries:

  • Under 100 Wh: Always permitted
  • 100–160 Wh: Allowed, but the number may be limited
  • Over 160 Wh: Not permitted

Make sure to pack enough standard batteries to power your concentrator for the entire flight, plus the required backup.

Battery Management & Travel Tips

To avoid complications:

• Bring enough fully charged batteries—and keep them organized between flights.

• Use power outlets whenever available (in airports, cars, or during layovers).

• Consider an external battery charger to charge multiple batteries at once.

• Carry a compact power strip and travel adapter for charging multiple devices abroad.

Remember: higher oxygen flow rates drain batteries faster. Pulse flow machines are lighter and longer-lasting, while continuous flow machines require larger, shorter-lasting batteries.

Multi-Voltage Compatibility

All Liberty Medical rental concentrators are multi-voltage, meaning you only need a travel plug adapter—not a power inverter.

Using an inverter could damage your POC. With the right adapter and a small power strip, you'll be able to keep your device and batteries charged wherever you are in the world.
